Study overview

Would you like to work as a creative biotechnology engineer on innovative solutions for health, industry and the environment, understand state-of-the-art technologies and actively shape the future of the life sciences?

Then the Applied Life Science Technologies degree programme at Ansbach University of Applied Sciences is just the right foundation for you! We offer you the opportunity to complete an interdisciplinary programme in eight semesters that combines the most important topics from biotechnology, medical technology and engineering sciences.

The programme covers two areas:

Industrial Biotechnology: Here you you will focus on the sustainable production of active ingredients, enzymes and bio-based materials. You will learn how to develop biotechnological processes and how to make industrial processes efficient and environmentally friendly.

Biomedical Engineering: You will focus on the development of technical solutions for medical applications. You will gain an insight into the design of modern diagnostic and therapeutic devices and deal with innovative approaches to improving healthcare.

The Applied Life Science Technologies degree programme focuses on scientific and technical principles as well as current challenges such as sustainability, digitalisation and personalised medicine. You will work on practical projects and prepare yourself optimally for the future in a highly dynamic profession.

Admission requirements

There are no specific admission requirements; however, an interest in the sciences in general or life sciences would be helpful.  Some experience with the German language is helpful, but is not a requirement for admission.
There are, however, requirements for English language proficiency.  As measured by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, you need level B2, as proven by

a.    an IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 6.5 or better
or
b.    a TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 84 points or better
or
c.    a certificate from an accredited institution certifying English language competency at the B2 level.

Additionally you must have the university entrance qualification or the eligibility for university admission for German universities. We use the Uni-Assist program (https://www.uni-assist.de/en/) to determine whether you qualify for admission.  Please refer to that website for further information.

Study structure

The first semester takes place in a mixed format, so that you can initially study in your home country and have time for the necessary formalities (visa application, etc.). From the second semester onwards, all lectures are face-to-face courses at Ansbach University of Applied Sciences.

In the first four semesters, you will learn important engineering and scientific basics and gain an overview of the diverse aspects of biotechnology.  At the beginning of the fifth semester, you will specialize in the fields of industrial biotechnology and biomedical engineering.

In the seventh semester, the practical semester, you will gain initial experience in professional fields  e.g. in a company or research institute.

In the eigth semester you will write your Bachelor’s Thesis. In addition, you have the opportunity to deepen your interests or learn about new topics in the elective modules.
