The Bioprocess Engineering laboratory, which is assigned to the Industrial Biotechnology degree program, is divided into two sub-labs. In one lab, research projects are mostly carried out with partners (e.g., Symrise AG - Holzminden; Chromsystems Instruments & Chemicals GmbH - Munich; University Hospital - Erlangen) and students under direction of Prof. Dr. Dirk Fabritius and Dipl.-Ing. Katrin Köhl carried out. The focus is on the production and purification of natural substances (e.g., proteins/enzymes). Genetically modified microorganisms are also used for the syntheses. Bioreactors (fermenters), filtration systems (crossflow), centrifuges, photometers and various chromatographic systems are available in the lab. If necessary, pathogenic microorganisms of risk group 2 can also be used. In the second lab, internships for the Bachelor's degree in Industrial Biotechnology (IBT) and the English-language Master's degree in Applied Biotechnology (ABI) take place in small groups in the fields of biochemistry, bioprocess engineering and protein purification.
