Dual study opportunities under the umbrella of the dual university

Under the umbrella brand of "hochschule dual", Ansbach University of Applied Sciences offers dual study opportunities together with 20 other universities. Hochschule dual serves as an information platform for prospective students, companies and universities on this form of study. Uniform quality standards are communicated through this umbrella brand. This initiative of the universities (Hochschule Bayern e. V.) was launched in 2006 and is supported by the Bavarian State Ministry of Education and Culture, Science and Art.

In principle, all undergraduate courses of study at Ansbach University of Applied Sciences that do not involve part-time employment can be studied in a dual system. Dual study means that university studies are generally combined with more practical time. There are two variants for this:

Dual study options = combined study (IHK/HWK apprenticeship + university studies) or study with in-depth practical experience (practical phases in a company over the entire study period + university studies)

Advantages of a dual study option:

  • More practical relevance
  • Financial support during studies
  • Best career opportunities
  • Takeover opportunities within the company
  • Acquisition of important key competences

Option 1: Combined study

Further information on the compound study programme

Study format:       Integrated training = university studies + company training + practice
Award:Bachelor's degree and vocational qualification with state chamber examination
Duration and practice periods:4.5 years standard period of study of which at least 27.5 months professional training and practice
Requirements:  university entrance qualification recognised in Bavaria, vocational training contract with a supplementary agreement with a company

The combined study programme is a combination of studies at a university and parallel vocational training in a company. The vocational training is fully recognised by the IHK/HWK. The formula applies accordingly:

Regular bachelor's degree at the university + vocational training in the company + qualified practical activities that prepare for the later area of responsibility in the company + preparation of the bachelor's thesis (if possible in the company). Duration: 3.5 to 4.5 years.

The in-company assignments are usually divided into practical phases that precede the study programme, the semester breaks, the practical semester and the time for writing the final thesis. The final vocational examination usually takes place in the third year.

The university timetable corresponds to that of regular studies, so that dual students attend the same lectures and seminars together with non-dual students. In this way, dual students receive a broad, high-quality, application-oriented theoretical education and acquire a large portfolio of professional skills through the additional extensive practical units in the company.

Special features:

The preparation for the final vocational examination is regulated differently.
Please note: (Specialist) school-leavers who have passed the Abitur are entitled to attend vocational school, not compulsory vocational school.

The following options are available:

  • Vocational school instruction (variant 1):
  • Integration of dual students into the regular apprenticeship class in the first year of apprenticeship - in this case the 2nd year of school can be attended under certain circumstances. In the second and third year of the apprenticeship, preparation takes place through self-study. Old examination documents can be requested from various publishing houses for preparation - information on this can be obtained from the relevant chamber. (most common variant)
  • Vocational school instruction (variant 2):
  • Training of dual students in a separate vocational school subject class for dual students in the first, second and third year of apprenticeship. Vocational school instruction and the university plan are coordinated. The establishment of a separate subject class is only possible with 16 students per study programme & training occupation in the academic year. In the initial phase the Bay. Ministry of Culture approves a smaller number (approx. 12 participants).
  • Other: self-study, seminars in the company, inter-company training

Procedure:

  1.     Early search for a training place in the company (approx. 12/14 months before the start of training)
  2.     Concluding an apprenticeship contract
  3.     Application to the university (02.05.-15.07.) with the training contract (apply for advance admission/reservation)
  4.     Start training
  5.     Application for a place at the university (admission via the special quota possible, possibly advance admission: submit notification of admission from the previous year)
  6.     after approx. 13 months in the company, studies at the university begin
  7.     University phases and practical phases alternate (practical work mainly in the practical semester and during the lecture-free period)
  8.     IHK/HWK examination mostly in the 3rd year of training
  9.     After successfully passing the IHK/HWK exams, companies and dual students agree individually on further cooperation
  10.     The practice-oriented Bachelor's thesis in the company concludes the dual training

Option 2: Study with in-depth practical experience

Further information on studies with in-depth practice

Study format: Practice-integrating = university studies + intensive company practice - at least 50% more practice in regular studies
Award:Bachelor degree / Master degree
Duration and practice periods:3.5 years standard period of study of which at least 16 months operational practice
Requirements:  university entrance qualification recognised in Bavaria, educational contract for studies with in-depth practical experience with a company

The study with in-depth practical experience is the combination of intensive practice in a company and study at a university. Students gain extensive practical experience parallel to their regular bachelor or master studies at the university. Vocational training as in the combined study programme is not a component. The following formulas apply to studies with in-depth practical experience:

Bachelor: Regular bachelor's degree at the university + intensive practical experience in the company with own projects + preparation for the later area of responsibility in the company + bachelor's thesis (partly in the company).

Master: Regular Master's degree at the university + intensive practice in the company with own projects + preparation for the later area of responsibility in the company + Master's thesis (in the company). Duration of the Master's programme: 1.5 to 2 years.

In-company assignments are usually spread over the semester break, the practical semester and the time for writing the final thesis. In most cases, the timetable corresponds to that of the regular course of study, so that dual students attend the same lectures and seminars together with non-dual students. In this way, dual students receive a broad, high-quality, application-oriented theoretical education and acquire a large portfolio of professional skills through the additional extensive practical units in the company.

Approach:

  1. Search for practical work in a company that corresponds to the content of the future subject (also possible until the 3rd semester)
  2. conclude an employment contract
  3. Application for a place at the university (admission via the special quota is possible if an education contract is sent in with the application)
  4.  Start your studies
  5. University phases and practical phases alternate (practical work mainly in the practical semester and during the lecture-free period)
  6. Carry out project work on specific issues of the contracting company
  7. A smooth transition into the professional world is being shaped
  8.  the practice-oriented Bachelor thesis in the company ends the dual training

Finding practice partners

In principle, the Ansbach University of Applied Sciences offers dual study opportunities with any company that fulfils the entry requirements. These can be found under the heading "For Companies".

We recommend that all prospective students who are looking for a company that offers a course of study with in-depth practical experience or a combined course of study should visit our university job exchange.

Furthermore, you can find potential companies in the trade fair booklet of the university contact fair as well as by using the search field of hochschule dual below.

For companies

Offer dual study opportunities in the company

The entry requirements for training together with the university are well met by companies of all sizes:

They provide a training/internship place for which the cooperation between the trainee/apprentice or student/student and the company is contractually regulated.
They guarantee the comprehensive quality of the practical training, which is professionally oriented towards the later professional activity.
You provide a contact person*in/mentor*in your company who accompanies or coaches the student during the practical phases, is in contact with the university and ideally is informed about the study and examination plan.

How does a company become a training partner?

  • Selection of applicants by the company (taking into account the admission requirements: General qualification for university entrance/subject-specific qualification for university entrance/subject-specific access for particularly qualified professionals, if necessary N.C.)
  • Conclusion of training/internship contracts with your selected candidates (sample contracts available from IHK/HWK or hochschule dual)
  • The guidelines for the practical semester must be observed: www.hs-ansbach.de > Service > For students > Practical semester
  • With a concluded training/internship contract, your candidates apply for a place at the university either one year before the start of their studies (joint studies) or in the year of the planned start of their studies (studies with in-depth practical experience).
  • A copy of the training contract (joint studies) or education contract (studies with in-depth practical experience) is submitted with the documents for the application for a study place, if necessary also the letter of admission from the previous year

The advantages for your company:

  • Early securing of highly qualified, performance-motivated junior staff
  • Productive and responsible work of young people in the company already during their studies: no need for induction after graduation
  • Imparting important key competences to students in practice
  • Comprehensive familiarisation phase - there is enough time to find out the optimal employability of the future graduates
  • Strong attachment of the students or graduates to your company
  • As a rule, the dual system graduates gain three times as much practical and business experience as conventional graduates (combined studies) or twice as much (studies with in-depth practical experience) - and all this with the same university education
  • Intensive contacts between companies and universities, intensification of technology and knowledge transfer
  • Combined studies: The double degree also means: no more loss of good trainees to later studies - the study programme with integrated vocational training attracts performance-motivated young people and the company retains its own junior staff
  • Studies with in-depth practical experience in the bachelor's degree: Also suitable for junior employees who have already completed their vocational training and who would like to study so that the next generation of employees is retained by the company
  •  Studies with in-depth practical experience in the Master's programme: Suitable for both your own dual Bachelor's degree (the company retains the next generation of employees) and regular Bachelor's degree graduates.
