Careers / Future Prospects

Post graduate students have diverse employment opportunities in the chemical and pharmaceutical field as well as other employment sectors. This is due to the wide range of subjects offered in this course of study.

The following list shows some of the most frequent fields our postgraduates find employment in:

  • Chemical and pharmaceutical industry
  • Food and beverage industry
  • Cosmetic, paper and textile industry
  • Plant and equipment engineering
  • Production of resources and biomass
  • Environmental protection or environmental measurement
  • Further job opportunities can be found at government agencies (technical monitoring, environmental field, health services)
  • Self employment (e.g. patent system, management consultancy)

Future Prospects

Generally future prospects in the field of biotechnology are excellent. This is confirmed by a comprehensive study. The “Deutsche Industrievereinigung Biotechnologie” commissioned a study in 2007. It was carried out by the “Frauenhofer Institut für System- und Innovationsforschung“ and the “Deutschen Institut für Wirtschaft (DIW) Berlin”.

These are the main points of interest taken from the study:

  • Between 258,000 and 443,000 jobs are already influenced by bio-technology.
  • More than 100,000 jobs will be added in the years to follow. Of course this depends on the market situation.
  • Biotechnology will have secured or created between 369,000 – 596,000 jobs by the year 2020.
  • This amounts to more than the 440,000 persons presently employed in the whole chemical industry today.
